17. San Francisco Bay, North

Jose Moya del Pino | oil on canvas in a recessed lunette | 9 feet by 54 inches A companion piece to 16, this scene of another part of the bay matches it in medium, scale, and outlook. An observer watches artist Otis Oldfield, wearing his familiar beret, at work as he sketches the northern Embarcadero below him, with boats and sailboats in the bay, and the uninhabited Marin hills in the distance. Alcatraz Prison is on the island in the middle of the bay, with factories in left foreground sporting tall, man-shaped chimneys. As in the case of Oldfield's painting, were the wall transparent the viewer would still have the same prospect looking north.  Bay North San Francisco
